Acousto-optic modulation of a wavelength-scale waveguide

چکیده
Since the advent of laser, acousto-optic modulators have been an important tool for controlling light. Recent advances in on-chip lithium niobate waveguide technology present new opportunities these devices. We demonstrate a collinear modulator suspended film employing high-confinement, wavelength-scale waveguide. By strongly confining optical and mechanical waves, this improves figure-of-merit that accounts both electro-mechanical efficiency by orders magnitude. Our device demonstration marks significant technological advance acousto-optics promises novel class compact low-power frequency shifters, tunable filters, non-magnetic isolators, beam deflectors.

Underwater Wireless Acousto-Optic Waveguide (UWAOW)
The present study originated in the lack of research into achieving underwater total internal reflection (TIR) via the acousto-optic effect. The uniqueness of this technique exists in the fact that it is based on a high sound pressure level which induces a localised change in refractive index of seawater sufficient to achieve total internal reflection within the communication channel. Different...

Among several optical devices in integrated optics, the fundamental characteristics of collinear optical switching devices have been studied about optical dielectric waveguides. Conventional waveguidetype acousto-optic (A-O) devices use collinear and longitudinal interactions with mode coupling based on the Bragg condition between optical waves and surface acoustic waves (SAW). Collinear A-O de...

A Guide to Acousto-Optic Modulators
Sound waves travelling through a crystal can be modelled as crests of increased refractive index alternating with troughs of decreased refractive index. Light incident on gradients in refractive index is scattered, therefore the light scatters from the acoustic wavefronts. In an AOM the light scattered from successive wavefronts interferes constructively. Figure 1 shows two rays of light imping...
